W Eugene “Andy” Anderson, 90 of Ashland passed away on Sunday, December 17 at Samaritan Medical Center. He was born near West Carlisle in Coshocton County to Kenneth and Ruth (Graham) Anderson. In 1951, Andy graduated from the former Union High School and in 1955, graduated cum laude from Olivet Nazarene University, Bourbonnais Illinois. He furthered his education receiving a master’s degree from The Ohio State University in 1962. He participated in five National Science Foundation summer programs at the University of Kansas, University of Arizona, North Dakota State University, College of Wooster, and Knox College.
Andy spent 44 years as a high school teacher including 13 years at Jeromesville and Hillsdale High School followed by 28 years at Ashland High School retiring as chairman of the Science Department. His dedication to education was also displayed as a 28-year member of the Hillsdale School Board and 7 years on the Ashland County Career Center Board. He was proud to have been the first Chemistry teacher when the original Hillsdale High School was opened in 1965 and part of the building committee for the new Hillsdale School complex which opened in 2023. His commitment to education was also evident in leadership positions in both the Ashland City and North Central Ohio Teacher’s Association. Focus on higher education is also evidenced by the W Eugene and Donna Anderson scholarships at both Olivet Nazarene University and Mount Vernon Nazarene University.
Community involvement was important for Andy as evidenced by 59 years as a member of the Hayesville Lions Club where he was recognized as a Melvin Jones Fellow for service. He was also a proud 13-year member of the Firelands Electric Board of Directors among other community and church elected and volunteer positions.
Andy met the love of his life, Donna Kirkpatrick while attending college. They were married on December 23, 1955, in Janesville, Wisconsin. She survives as well as the couple’s two daughters, Karol Scholz of Sunbury, and Karin (Mike) Carmoney of Mitchellville, Iowa, and one son Ken Anderson of Columbus. His grandchildren are Andrew (Vanessa) Scholz, Liz (Ryan) Stroop, Jill Carmoney and Sam Carmoney. Great-grandchildren are Brooklyn, Mason and Gavin Scholz and Ella, Norah and Josie Stroop. Also surviving are two sisters-in-law Ellen and Pat Anderson of Frazeysburg. Andy was preceded in death by his two brothers Fred and Joe Anderson and a son in law, Kim Scholz.
Andy and Donna attended Grace Church where visitation will be held Tuesday December 26 from 6-8 pm and one hour before the funeral which will be held at Grace Church on Wednesday December 27 at 11 am. Grace Church is located at 1144 West Main Street, Ashland. A separate graveside service at Frazeysburg Cemetery will be held on Thursday December 28 at 11 am where Andy will be laid to rest next to his parents and grandparents.
