Sherry Smith Obituary

Oh Mom, our hearts are forever broken, as we never expected to say our final goodbyes this soon.

Sherry Ann Smith, 81, passed away unexpectedly from this life on Mother’s Day, May 12, 2024, at her residence in Jeromesville, Ohio.

Sherry was born on December 3, 1942, in Lodi, Ohio, the daughter of the late Grace Irene and James Giles Fisher. Due to the early death of her father, Sherry and her sister, Sandy, lived with their mother and grandparents, Mary and Glen Sanders, in Lodi until 12 years later, when their mother married William (Abe) Beshire, who was a wonderful step-father to both. Sherry was a 1960 graduate of Lodi High School.

Sherry married her soulmate, Phillip Leroy Smith, on June 30, 1962, and celebrated 58 years of marriage before his passing in February of 2021. Together they were blessed with three children, of whom she was extremely proud; Kathy (Gary) Waites of Pickerington, Ohio, Rob Smith of Ashland, Ohio, and Amy (Bob) Saffle of Mifflin, Ohio. She also had four grandchildren that she truly adored; Hailey Burger of Ashland, Ohio, Garrett Waites of Pickerington, Ohio, Kyler Waites of Columbus, Ohio, and Kamryn Waites of Marysville, Ohio.

Sherry is also survived by two sisters that she cherished immensely; Sandy Burge of Burbank, Ohio and Stevie Beshire of Wadsworth, Ohio, along with Bev DeHaan, cousin and classmate who was more like a sister, and cousins Vickie Patterson, Jeff (Debbie) Patterson, Bonnie (John) Austin, and Jack (Barb) Wiley, as well as brother-in-law Terry (Becky) Smith and sister-in-law Diana (Daniel) Mullen. Some of her favorite memories included the many ladies’ outings and occasional trips she took with her family. She loved to tell her kids about all the adventures they had.

Sherry enjoyed the many years that she worked in the Hillsdale School District as a cafeteria/playground aide at Jeromesville Elementary. She made a point to know each of the students and kept a watchful eye on everyone. If you were planning to misbehave, you had better make sure Mrs. Smith wasn’t looking your way (especially her own children). However, her most cherished role was that of mother and homemaker. Her family gave her much joy and she loved each member fiercely. She was the kind of mother, grandmother, sister, and friend that anyone would want.

Sherry was blessed to be surrounded by wonderful and helpful neighbors. She was especially grateful for her neighbors next door, Dave and Suzie Foster, whose companionship and prayers helped her through the days and years following the death of her beloved husband. Sherry joined the Thursday Power Thought small group in the fall of 2022 where they studied and practiced power thoughts and scripture lessons. She treasured the fellowship with those she met through this group.

Sherry will be cremated, and a private celebration of life service will be planned for the family. Fickes Funeral Home in Jeromesville is assisting the family with arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Jeromesville Fire Department Association and sent to PO Box 102, Jeromesville, Ohio 44840.

Mom, we will rejoice in your memory and be grateful for the wonderful years we had with you, even though we desperately wish we could have had more. Thank you for putting up with us, especially through our teenage years, but mostly for always being there with “expert” advice when we needed it.

~ Forever in our hearts ~
