Samuel Garlyin Hinton, 83 of Wooster passed away peacefully, Saturday May 17, 2025, at his residence after a long battle. He was born July 16, 1941 in Waterford, Ohio, the son of Pearley B. and Bernice (Hardesty) Hinton.
He was a 1960 graduate of Northwestern High School. He served in the Army National Guard and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant. He began learning autobody from his older brother Eugene and started working for the Chevy Dealership in Wooster in 1969. He managed the body shop for many years and later worked in other capacities until retiring in 2019 with 50 years of service. He also volunteered several years for the New Pittsburg Fire Department.
Sam seemed to know everything and if he didn’t, he always found a way to make something work. He was an avid woodworker, carving unique things out of a single block of wood. He also enjoyed the outdoors through his gardening, trapping and beekeeping. A true pillar of the family, Sam’s greatest joys came from his love of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed spending time with them and following them in their school and sports endeavors.
He is survived by his wife of over 63 years, Phyllis Jean (Smith) Hinton, to whom he married September 9, 1961, three sons, Jeff (Darlene) Hinton, Mark Hinton and Scott (Jenny) Hinton, all of Wooster, grandchildren – Ashley (Josh) Leiner, Todd (Moriah) Hinton, Kyle Hinton, Nick Hinton, Brooke Hinton, Shelby Thorpe, 5 great-grandchildren and a sister, June Schaefer.
He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Max Hinton, Eugene Hinton, John (“Bill”) Hinton and Gerald Hinton.
On Saturday, May 24th, calling hours will be at Fickes Funeral Home in Jeromesville from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Services will follow and be officiated by Pastor Vonn Miller. Burial will follow at the New Pittsburg Cemetery.
The family also wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Lifecare Hospice, Rod and Mary Lou Hart, as well as Jen Rybicki for all their invaluable assistance during the last few months.
