Richard C. Hodge, age 93, of Shreve passed away peacefully at 5:15 a.m. Tuesday, September 1, 2020. He was born May 27, 1927 to Clayton and Marie Hodge of Wooster, Ohio. Richard graduated from Apple Creek High School in 1945 and was president of his class. He attended the College of Wooster.
Richard was a lifelong farmer. Only his love of his family surpassed his love of farming. In 1944 when his two older brothers were drafted into the Service during WWII, Richard kept the family farm operating, plowing with two mules. Through the years Richard was part of the many changes that occurred in agriculture production and was always a good steward of the land. He also enjoyed raising livestock. In 1944 he had the Grand Champion Steer at the Wayne County Fair. Richard loved the Wayne County Fair and only missed attending one year in his life.
Richard worked at Buckeye Container for 25 years. He was a long time member of St. John Lutheran Church, McZena, serving on council several times. He served on the Fairview Cemetery Board and was active in Farm Bureau participating in a Council for 50 years. In his younger days Richard called square dances at Wayne County Rural Youth and other locations and that is how he met the love of his life, his future wife, Marilyn Shearer.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Marilyn (Shearer) Hodge. He is also survived by his children Paul (Sona) Hodge of Shreve, Ann (Jim ) Obrecht of Shreve, Carolyn (Clyde) Cramer of Columbus, and Mary Beth (Dan) Pavuk of Perrysburg. He is survived by grandchildren, Marci (Jerry) Gibbon, Audrey (Brent) Repp, Ben (Robyn) Hodge, Elizabeth (Kyle) Hulewat, Katie (Doug) Foxx, David Obrecht, Nathan Pavuk, and Sarah Pavuk and 9 great-grandchildren.
Richard is also survived by his brother Robert Hodge of Canton and his sister Sevilla Jewell of Orrville. Besides his parents he is preceded in death by his brother Ervin Hodge.
