Janice "Jan" Harned Obituary

Janice “Jan” Eileen Harned (Austen), 87 of Ashland, was called home in the presence of her family on Wednesday, October 23, 2019 following an extended illness.

Jan was born on November 22, 1931 in Jeromesville to Dennis and Lois (Pocock) Austen. Jan graduated from Jeromesville High School in 1949 where she was a cheerleader and the basketball queen.

On January 27, 1950 Jan married the love of her life, Franklin “Frank” Harned of Hayesville. After marrying, Jan and Frank started their family, and Jan was happiest when she was raising

her children and later, babysitting her grandchildren. It was during these times that Jan instilled a love of peanut butter toast and hot chocolate into her grandchildren.

Jan never met an animal she didn’t love and had a heart for strays, including her cat, Snickers. But perhaps Jan was most well known for being a gracious hostess to anyone who entered her home – always keeping an endless supply of candy, pop and her famous scotcheroos on hand.

Jan is survived by her husband of almost 70 years, Frank of Ashland; four children, Doug Harned of Dublin, Steve Harned of Ashland, Cindy (Randy) Keys of Hilliard and Sandy (Don)

Mutchler of Ashland; nine grandchildren, Gina Stutz of Galloway, ShaNa (Jeff) Benner of Nova, Kevin Goon of Marysville, Brad (Amy) Moyers of Tennessee, Katie (Todd) Keating of Ashland,

Sarah (Kevin) Flanigan of Dublin, Brandon (Amanda) Harned of Clinton, Logan Harned of Ashland and Rachel Harned of California; eighteen great grandchildren, Sydney, Nathan, Wyatt,

Dane, Samuel, Blake, Katrina, Ben, Kassie, Kellie, Cecelia, Jillian, Brady, Max, Bobby, Adalee, Penny and Lincoln; one sister Lorine Austen of Ashland and one brother, Jim (Shirley) Austen

of Ashland and several sisters and brothers in law.

In addition to her parents, Jan was preceded in death by her brothers, Herman Austen, Leroy Austen and Dennis Austen, as well as her sister, Doris Robison and several sisters and

brothers in law.

A private family graveside service will be held on Saturday, November 9, 2019 at Jeromesville Cemetery with Pastor Doug Olsen officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to No Pawz Left Behind, 1130 East Main Street, Suite 116, Ashland, OH 44805 or the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl.17, Chicago, IL 60601.

Jan’s family wants to extend a heartfelt thank you to Pathways Hospice for the excellent care, support and companionship provided to Jan and Frank.
