Jim also enjoyed listening to country gospel music, including his favorite Bill Monroe gospel CDs. He also attended Jeromesville Christian Church.

On August 25, 1962 Jim married Norma Jean Perry. Survivors include his sons, Thomas (Vickie) of Ashland and Douglas (Sara Armani) of Berlin, Germany; grandchildren Thomas and Eliana Selvage of Ashland and Edwin Armani of Berlin, Germany; sisters, Sara Seibert of Wooster, Nancy (Don) Atterholt of Loudonville, Judy Hines of Dalton, and Pauline (Harry) Van Den Doleweert of Mansfield; brothers, Willis (Ruby) Selvage of Wooster and Roger (Peggy) Selvage of Ashland; and sister-in-law Sue Selvage of Wooster; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
