Gerald (Jerry) McAvene, 83 went home to be with his Lord on Sunday September 3, 2023. He was at
Kingston of Ashland. He was born on December 19, 1939 in Mansfield, OH, the son of James and
Eula (Young) McAvene. He graduated from Loudonville High School in 1958 and was a very proud
Vet of the Navy Seabee’s. He married Dorothy (Dottie) Dilgard at First Baptist Church, Ashland, on
April 8, 1966. He was extremely thankful that he accepted Christ as his Savior on February 26, 1965.
He served his Savior faithfully. He taught Sunday School for 38 years and assisted friend, Pastor Jim
Johnson in starting churches for 20 years. For ten years they were foster parents in Erie, PA, caring for
many children. On January 6, 2000, Jerry retired from Therm-O-Disc in Mansfield, OH. He attended
Calvary Baptist Church in Ashland, Harry Strachan, pastor.
He is survived by his wife, Dottie, his son, Tim (Lorie) McAvene of Ashland, and his daughter, Dawn
(Sean) Goldman of Mansfield. His grandchildren are Chris McAvene of Ashland, T.J. (Emma)
McAvene of Loudonville, Mallorie McAvene of Ashland, Brittany Long and Sheyanne Nickelson of
Mansfield. He also has 3 great grandchildren.
Services will be Noon on Wednesday, September 6, 2023 at Calvary Baptist Church, 210 Davis Road
Ashland, with Pastor Harry Strachan officiating. Family and friends may visit 1 hour prior to the
service at the church.
He will be laid to rest at Vermillion Cemetery in Hayesville.
Jerry had a great love for the Philippines. His desire is lieu of flowers, that any memorial donation be \\
made out to Calvary Baptist Church and all received will go for Bibles to the Philippine people who
beg for a Bible.
