Gerald David Mast, 84, passed away on December 23, 2023, after a yearlong battle with cancer. He was the owner, and then a partner, at Spring Meadow Veterinary Clinic for over 30 years until his retirement.
Gerald was born into a farming family in Millersburg, Ohio on March 22, 1939, the son of Ada Elmira Mast and Carl Oceadus Mast. A lifelong lover of nature and animals, he graduated from Wooster High School in 1957 and pursued undergraduate and veterinary education at Ohio State University, matriculating as a veterinarian in 1966. He served farmers and house pet owners throughout the community, mentored younger veterinarians, and enjoyed keeping up with research related to animal care.
In addition to his work, Gerald volunteered in his community, was an occasional turkey hunter and fisherman, and exercised at the YMCA. He enjoyed the company of his friends, neighbors, and a long succession of cats, dogs and birds at home. He was known for his gentleness, courtesy toward others, and willingness to help. He was a voracious reader of nonfiction, kept up with business and political news, and followed Ohio State and Cleveland Browns football.
Gerald is survived by his wife of 56 years, Kathleen Mast, to whom he was devoted, and his three children: Kelley, Patrick, and Thomas. He adored his six grandchildren, who called him “Old Dad”. He was predeceased by his beloved son, Carl, and his sister Nancy.
Gerald’s family is so grateful to the many friends, neighbors, medical professionals, and community members who stepped in to assist Gerald and Kathleen during his illness over this past year. They have shown true kindness and friendship. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Gerald’s name to Brethren Care.
Services will be 12:00 Noon Saturday January 13, 2024 at Fickes Funeral Home in Jeromesville. Burial will be in Moreland Cemetery. Friends may call 2 hours prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home.
