Dale Devoe Ables, 87 of Jeromesville passed away Sunday May 15, 2022 at Crystal Care Center of
Ashland. He was born June 7, 1934 in Ashland Samaritan Hospital to Alice Devoe Ables and
Louis Matthews Ables. Dale was a 1952 graduate of Jeromesville High School, a graduate
of Baldwin-Wallace University in Berea, Michigan State University in Lansing, MI and attended Drew
University Graduate School of Theology in Madison, New Jersey.
Mr. Ables was a chief supervisor for the Bureau of Quality Assurance, State of Ohio for 34 years. He
also taught high school for two years in the states of Michigan and Hawaii.
Mr. Ables after retirement served on Jeromesville City Council for 10 years and also 6 years on the
Council for Senior Citizens of Ashland County, heading the personnel Committee. He also served as a
Scout Master as did his father of Jeromesville’s Troop 521, achieving Life rank and awarded Scouting
Adult Order of the Arrow. Mr. Ables was a benevolent supporter of Ohio’s Passion Play, The Living
Word Outdoor Drama in Cambridge. He was an active participate in many Hillsdale Football
Homecomings, providing transportation for the Queens and attendants, donating from his automobile
collection as well as Jeromesville parades and Ashland University.
He was an active member of the Jeromesville United Methodist Church and provided a Children’s
Library as a memorial to his mother. He was a gardener and shared may arrangements with the church
and shut-ins.
Surviving Dale are his sister, Mary Annette Ables Ellwood and her husband Judge David A. Ellwood of
Senecaville, OH, nieces, Rose Ann Reed, his caregiver and husband, Rick Reed of Wooster, Mary
Catherine Riggle of Venice, FL, nephew, Luke David Ellwood and Tiffany of Springboro, OH and
several great nieces and nephews.
Services will be 11:00 AM Saturday May 21, 2022 at Jeromesville United Methodist Church with
Judge David Ellwood officiating. Burial will be in Jeromesville Cemetery.
There will be no calling hours.
Fickes Funeral Home in Jeromesville assisted the family with arrangements.
