Russell Leroy Harpster, 91, of Ashland, passed away on August 16, 2026, following a brief illness, with his family by his side.

He was born November 3, 1934, in Ashland County, the son of John and Helen (Morr) Harpster.

Russ was a three-sport varsity athlete for the Ashland Arrows, starting on the football, basketball and baseball teams. As a member of the undefeated 1951 football team, he started at end on both offense and defense. He continued his athletic career at Ashland University, where he played football and basketball, and later graduated from Ohio Northern University College of Law.

Russ practiced law in Ashland for 50 years, including many years with his son-in-law, Jack Vanosdall. He also served for many years on the Board of Directors of Wayne Savings Bancshares and Wayne Savings Community Bank, including as Chairman of the Board. Deeply committed to his community, Russ gave generously of his time and leadership to numerous civic and charitable organizations. He was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where he also served as a Sunday school teacher.

For 30 years, Russ was the familiar voice of Ashland Arrows football. His love of sports continued throughout his life, but his greatest joy was his family. He took tremendous pride in his children and grandchildren and rarely missed an opportunity to cheer them on at their sporting events.

Russ will be remembered for his strong work ethic, wonderful sense of humor and, above all, his generosity. He was always willing to help others, often quietly and without recognition. He was an avid reader, enjoyed watching and feeding the birds, going to the gym and socializing with friends, and was an accomplished gin rummy player.

He is survived by his wife of more than 73 years, Janice Henderson Harpster, whom he married January 17, 1953; a daughter, Kathy (Jack) Vanosdall of Powell, Ohio; three sons, Jeffrey Harpster (life partner, Margaret Lacalle) of Boca Raton, Florida, John (Toni) Harpster of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Chris (Tracey) Harpster of Powell, Ohio; six grandchildren, John and James Vanosdall, Erin and Max Harpster, and Ryan and Dane Harpster; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Gerald "Mose" Harpster, Donald Harpster, Robert Harpster and Carlton "Pug" Harpster; and two sisters, Margery Galloway and Jean Endsley.

A celebration of Russ's life will be held at a later date. Additional details will be announced when arrangements are finalized.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donating to the Ashland YMCA or Brethren Care Village.
