Rev. Dr. Gary L. Wilson, 84, from Loudonville, Ohio, was surrounded by his loving family when he went home to be with his Lord, on Thursday, July 16, 2026. He was born September 14, 1941, inSalem, West Virginia to Samuel "Buzz" Wilson and Gladys (Kinney) Wilson.
Gary served in the US Military in both the Army and Navy from 1961 to 1967. He obtained his Master of Divinity in 1982 and Doctor of Ministry in 1985 from Ashland Theological Seminary. Gary was a true academic traveling to Isreal for an archeological dig during this graduate studies. An avid reader and lifelong learner, he immersed himself in the study of Scripture and pursued Hebrew and Greek to better understand the Bible in its original languages.
Gary believed that diligent study was an essential part of faithfully serving his congregation and communicating the Scriptures with clarity and integrity. He served as a pastor for over 40 years, spending his last 27 years of ministry at Mayflower Church, in Mansfield, Ohio. Gary had the gift of hospitality and spent countless hours visiting his congregation and members of his community in times of need. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, gardener, beekeeper, and shepherd to his children and grandchildren. Gary was affectionately referred to as Dr. Dad.
Gary is survived by Carol Wilson, his wife of 38 years. He is also survived by his first wife Judith Collin-Lousier, his daughter, Julie (Chris) Stephens, granddaughter Felicia Wilson, stepsons Ryan (Renee) Twining, Steven Twining, and grandchildren: Riley, Reed, Roland, Shane, Russell, Lillian, and Nelle Twining. He is also survived by siblings Lyvonne Terry, Glenn (Barbara) Wilson, and Sarah (John) Terry.
He was preceded in passing by his parents and his brother, Larry Wilson.
Gary's celebration of life service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, July 24th at Mohicanville Community Church with family visitation one hour prior to the service. Paster Scott Woodlee will be officiating.
Family expresses gratitude to the staff of Good Shepherd for their kindness and attentive care in Gary's final weeks. Thank you also to Fickes Funeral home for their professionalism and compassion.
