Mildred Fortney, 92 of Loudonville passed away Tuesday May 3, 2011 at Colonial Manor.  She was born in Hayesville September 4, 1918 to Charles and Nettie Lefever and grew up in the Jeromesville area.  She was a resident of Ashland County all her life.  She received her first two years of schooling at the Oak Grove one room school near Mohicanville.  For her remaining school years she attended Jeromesville and graduated from High School there in 1936.  She was a member of the girl's basketball team and the Glee Club.
She spent her early days working as a clerk in Fabers grocery store and the U.S. Post Office in Jeromesville.  She was also a 4-H leader in the Jeromesville area.  She was a long time member of the Synagogue Church of God near Hayesville where she once served as treasurer.  She was also a former Sunday School teacher and sang in the choir.
For sometime she attended Mohicanville Church and First Baptist Church of Loudonville.
She had been a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and Helping Hands of Loudonville.  In former years she was a clerk in Mumpers and Miners grocery markets in Loudonville.
She enjoyed writing poetry and had several of her poems published.  She enjoyed all kinds of crafts and sending cards, flowers and playing the piano.
For many years Mrs. Fortney purchased dozens of dolls, wrapped them in her handmade doll afghans and gave them to the Salvation Army each christmas.  She was known as the doll lady.  She was honored several times and was given a Certificate of Appreciation.  For many years she made lap afghans and gave them to Heartland Home at Christmas time.  She also donated afghans to the Red Cross and she gave them to many family members and friends.
She is survived by one daughter, Jeanine Crossmon of Westerville and a son, Darrell Moherman of California, one step-daughter, Dixie and James Root of Plymouth, six grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, two step great grandchildren, one step great great grandchild, a sister Alice Etzwiler of Portland, Oregon and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Fortney in March 2002, her parents, her son Larry Moherman in September 2006, a brother, Howard Jones, three sisters, Geneva Jones, Pauline Drushell and Ada Shopbell, two step-sisters, Verna Rhone and Francine Danine and a great grandson, Hunter Moherman.
Services will be 11:00 AM Saturday May 7, 2011 at Fickes Funeral Home in Jeromesville with, Rev. James Brothers, the husband of Mrs. Fortney's niece, officiating.  Burial will be in Vermillion Cemetery at Hayesville.  Friends may call from 9:30 - 11:00 AM on Saturday before the service.
In lieu of flowers, it would have been Mrs. Fortney's wish that you donate a doll to be given to the Salvation Army for the children or to the charity of your wish.
