John J. Sloan died April 19, 2012 at Good Shepherd Hospice in Auburndale, Fl.  He passed on his oldest daughter's birthday.

He was born on Feb2 4, 1929 to John E. and Cora (Burdick)Sloan. On Nov 24, 1950, he married Pauline Funk with whom he shared a birthday.

He attended Ashland High School, was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, American Legion Post 88 and the Masonic Temple of West Salem. He loved making music with his mandolin and harmonica. He had worked as a carpenter with his father , constructing homes on the family farm now known as Sloan and Steele Avenues in Ashland, Oh. He was also a milk transporter and had worked at Ashland College.   His biggest dream was fulfilled when he converted his 120 acre farm to a family campground known as Sloan's Hickory Lake starting in 1969. It continues in business today and many families cherish memories of summers spent there.

His is survived by his wife, Polly; son Michael (Donna) of Jeromesville; daughter Nancy Hider of Red Haw; daughter Molly(Rob) Hastings of West Salem. Grandchildren Brandy Schaad, Terra Hider, Chad Hider, Matt Sloan, Mark Siders, Jillian, Brice and Addie Hastings.  He also has 12 greatgrandchildren.  Also survived by 2 brothers, Donald and Elmer Sloan of Ashland.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Frances Witmer, Doris McBride, Portia Stiebritz, and Helen Swinehart;  brothers Kenneth, Paul, David, Howard, Robert and Roger Sloan.

Services will be held at St. Peter Lutheran Church in New Pittsburg on Wednesday, April 25 at 10:00am. Calling hours will be at Fickes Funeral Home, Jeromesville on Tuesday, April 24 from 6:00 to 9:00pm.
