Obituary

Jocelyn Lee (Brightbill) Jones, 80, of Ashland passed away peacefully on October 4 at Kingston of Ashland, surrounded by the love of her family and friends.

Born June 5, 1946, in Mansfield, Jocelyn was the daughter of Richard and Laura Brightbill. She graduated with the final class of Hayesville High School in 1964 and attended The Ohio State University for one year.

On June 26, 1966, Jocelyn married her high school sweetheart, Richard (Dick) Jones, with whom she shared 60 wonderful years of marriage. Together they built a home centered around church, family, and the joy of shared experiences. They were devoted fans of the Cleveland Indians and Ohio State football and basketball, traveling to spring training in Florida and cheering on the Buckeyes at the Rose, Citrus, and Holiday Bowls. Over the years, they visited all but one of the original Big Ten football stadiums—a testament to their love of adventure and tradition.

Jocelyn worked briefly at Tappan and later as a teller at Wellington Bank. After her children were in school, she served as secretary for the Steele Avenue (Ashland) Church of Christ. Her greatest calling, however, was her role as homemaker and mother. She set her hands to sewing, canning and freezing produce from the family garden, leading her daughters’ Brownie troop, guiding their 4‑H projects, and supporting countless church and school activities. In her later years, she cherished the peaceful view of the pond at the home she and Dick built in 1980, enjoying the blue herons that visited its banks and the hummingbirds that came to her window feeders.

Jocelyn faced Multiple Sclerosis with remarkable strength and grace for 54 years, spending the last 35 confined to a wheelchair. She was lovingly cared for by her devoted husband at home until the final years of her life. Jocelyn’s family rejoices that she is now free of MS and resting in the presence of her Lord.

She is survived by her husband, Richard; daughters Lori (Ed) Sarkel of Hilliard and Jennifer (Gary) Myers of Hilliard; grandchildren Elizabeth (Torrance) Smith of Willow Spring, NC, Katherine Sarkel of Cincinnati, Natalie Myers and Grant Myers of Hilliard, great‑granddaughter Charlotte Smith; and her brother Larry Brightbill.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Laura Brightbill; sister Kay Ruley; and brothers Ted Brightbill and Hal Brightbill.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 7 at Fickes Funeral Home in Jeromesville, with Minister Tim Nowlin officiating. Friends may call from 9:00–11:00 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow in Vermillion Cemetery, Hayesville. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ashland Church of Christ.
