Richard Wayne Bone, 82 of Wooster passed on March 26, 2019 at The Avenue at Wooster after a period of declining health.

Dick was born January 14, 1937 in Ashland to Minnie (Hauenstein) and Wayne Bone.  He graduated from Ashland High School in 1955.  He served in the U.S. Army 1955-1957.

He worked at Myers Pump in Ashland for 19 years before going to Flint & Walling Pump in Kendallville, Indiana for 28 years.  While at Myers, Dick taught pump school in some of the winter months.  His dealers would send their employees to Ashland on Sunday evening and they would stay till Thursday. While there, they would learn about the product they were selling, how it worked, how it was made and how to fix it.  Since he was a salesman usually traveling Monday thru Thursday, he had a lot of customers that became very good friends.

At some point in time someone asked Dick if he wanted the old hand pump off of his grandfather’s farm?  He said “sure”.  That started what was a lifetime of collecting pumps.  The Jane got the pump and pump jack off of her grandfather’s farm.  Since he traveled, Dick would always be looking for the unusual while he was on the road.  While in Kendallville, Indiana he called me one night and said he found this really different pump, he thought it was kind of expensive so he called home to see if he should spend the money?  My reply was “if you have never seen one like it, you’d better bring it home”.  He did and it is what I think is a beautiful piece of craftsmanship and the one we kept.  When we decided to down-size he had over 200 pumps.  They might have all looked alike but they were made by different companies.  Jane’s mom, Mary Austin, was one of his best suppliers, she would go to flea markets always looking for a different pump.  It seemed like she always had a different one for his birthday.  When her traveling days were over she did counted stitch pictures of pumps, then crocheted an afghan and put a pump on it for him.

Dick was a lifetime member of the Elks.  He married Jane Austin Kraft Bone in 1980, she survives. Dick is also survived by 2 sisters, Ann Slater of Jeromesville, OH and Kay Anderson of Johnstown, OH.

Dick had 2 children from his first marriage to Phyllis Van Meter Bone, Debby (Jeff) Williams of Ashland and Brett Bone of Port Orange, Florida.  He has 3 granddaughters, Amber (Jonathan), Brandi and Shannon of Ashland and 5 great grandchildren, Kody, Jazlyn, Zack, Hayden and Grayson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Dora Mae Berlier and a great grandson, Michael.

There will be a calling hours on April 6th, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. at Fickes Funeral Home, 84 North High Street, Jeromesville, OH 44840 with a memorial service following at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Randy Moomaw officiating.

So sorry to hear about Dicks passing. We can remember our time together in Florida going to the Strawberry Festival, seeing a car show, and picking oranges from the back yard trees. Good times and good memories.
R.I.P. Dick
