Victor (Vic) Kahl, 90, of Hayesville passed
peacefully into heaven early Saturday
morning, August 3, 2019. He was surrounded
by his loving family. Vic was a kind and
gentle man who loved the Lord.
He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Vic
was born September 23, 1928 in Ashland County to John H. and Susie M. (Whisler) Kahl.
He was a lifetime resident of Ashland County and graduated from Hayesville High School in 1946. Vic
met the love of his life, Marcella (Sally) Tugend,
on the bus when he was in the third grade. They were married on November 28, 1948 at the
Mohicanville Community Church and spent the next 70 years loving and caring for each other.
In 1968, the construction of State Route 30 forced them to physically move their home one mile west
where they would raise their daughter Kimberly. Mr. Kahl was a Marine and served in the Korean War,
1952-1954. He was awarded a Purple Heart. Vic made many lifelong friends during his tour of duty.
As a veteran he continued to serve by presiding over the Hayesville Memorial Day parade for many
years.
He also took pride in speaking at local Veterans Day programs. Upon his return from active duty, he
purchased the Kimber-Lane dairy farm that he operated with his family for the rest of his life. Vic
milked registered holstein cattle and was also well known for testing milk and breeding cattle. He was
a lifetime member of the Ohio Holstein Association and the FFA. In addition to farming, Vic was a
Hillsdale School bus driver for 54 years. He enjoyed getting to know the families and hauling students
to school and to their extra curricular events. Vic was an avid Falcon Fan and attended thousands of
Hillsdale sporting events and activities. He was often greeted with, “I rode your bus!” Vic’s faith,
church, and church family were an integral part of his life. He was a member of the Hayesville United
Methodist Church. He served his church in various ways. He was on the Administrative Board for over
50 years and also served as the chairman. He helped build the church parsonage and also was involved
in the church basement project. His strong faith guided him throughout his lifetime. Vic’s pride and joy
was his family. He loved his grandchildren with all his heart and attended all of their activities. He
enjoyed fishing with family and friends at Lake Erie, piloting his own plane, snowmobiling with the
Barnstormers of Hayesville, and coaching youth softball. He served on the Zoning Board and was a
previous member of the Hayesville Lions Club. Mr. Kahl is survived by his wife, daughter Kim (Bill)
Rogers; grandchildren, Dexter (Allison Gross), Adrianna, and Jaxston; sister-in-law, Phyllis Kahl,
many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant granddaughter,
Bond Kaylee Rogers; brother, R. Blair Kahl, sister, Lela (Roger) Hazen; sisters-in-law, Louella Tugend
and Myrene Tugend, and a brother-in-law, Richard Tugend. Vic was blessed with many new friends at
the Brethren Care facilities. A special thank you to all those who took such wonderful care of Vic at
Med Central in Mansfield, Dr. Katherine Exten and her staff, the nursing center at Brethren Care and
Belmont Tower. Also, the Wasen Rehabilitation Center and the Hospice staff who cared for Vic were
exceptionally loving and kind. The family will receive family and friends Friday, August 9, 2019 from
4-8 p.m. at Fickes Funeral Home in Jeromesville. A celebration of Vic’s extraordinary life will be held
on Saturday, August 10, 2019, 11 a.m., at the Hayesville United Methodist Church with Pastor Paula
Archdeacon officiating. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the service. Vic will be laid
to rest in the Vermillion Cemetery. The Ashland County Honor Guard will conduct military rites. The
